Was driving home just now when I decided to exit at Jln Bahar instead of my usual Corporation road exit, saw a few vehicles parked on Lanes 1 & 2 and someone lying in the middle of the road... So decided to stop my car by the shoulder lane since I have always had a first aid kit in my car.
To my horror, I saw the victim; an indian biker believed to be a Malaysian with a a towel wrapped around his calf tied with a plastic bag for pressure and he was tossing and turning.. So being trained in first aid; attended the civil defence course [well over 10 years ago] I did what I had to do, I instructed the uncles around to tie the gauze around the towel (cuz my gauze packaging turned yellowish so did not use that on the other open wound that was left exposed. And with the open wounds I took out a sanitary pad (the only thing that I reckon that is sanitized enough to be used on an open wound) and instructed one of the helpers to apply direct pressure as I am extremely afraid of open wounds; maybe it made it easier cuz the victim is indian and his dark coloured skin somehow toned down my fear factor cuz it made the wound looks not as obvious as someone with fair skin colour. I also had the victim to rest his leg on the storage box that fell off his bike as to slow stop the blood from oozing out further... Now the people around might think why the sanitary pad? The reason is simple, it is has good absorbancy and that it is well sanitized. Waited around for the ambulance to come before I left the scene.
So why the topic for this post? Reason is simple, there was a flight attendant, apparently she was in the cab that knocked the victim down, but she didnt know what to do [flight attendants are supposed to be well trained to handle emergencies], instead when I approached she asked me if I knew first aid! I was in shocked! But then I did what I could do, ask the people around to support the victim so that he will not move around too much and cause more injuries, administrate first aid and try to help out. Then two policemen came on bikes, ofcourse I understood that one had to direct the traffic, which was not an easy thing to do on an expressway with 90kph speed limit, the other one just stood around talking on the phone to direct the ambulance to the scene. Which by the way he seemed annoyed when I told him to tell the ambulance that it's PIE towards Tuas and at the sign where it says 300m before the Jln Bahar exit. He was the one who asked for landmark and by the way the road sign is the best landmark around! Also IMO, he could have asked someone else to direct the ambulance and try to apply first aid, I mean these people are supposed to be trained in applying first aid in cases of emergencies. I mean, I have the phobia of seeing open wounds too! But I did what I can to help! Oh and also army trucks passed by the scene but none took initiative to stop the vehicles to help!
Whats wrong with these people? Police, flight attendant, army personals, these people are trained to handle emergencies and administrate first aid when needed but yet none did the right thing and none instructed the helpers the right thing to do... Nonetheless, it just made me think what will they do if this happened to their love ones, what will they do?

It seems that someone had a plan in mind when you deviated from your normal exit. =)
